Lincolnshire

About this beautiful County

East Lincolnshire is the largest district in the county and is a delightful area full of breathtaking views and charming towns and villages. From the sandy award winning beaches, through the unique landscapes of the marshes and fens and up into the charm of the Wolds, The area is an unspoilt joy. The old misconception of Lincolnshire being flat is soon blown away in the Wolds, and the hillside paths and roads offer spectacular views across miles of patchwork fields, marshland pastures and countless churches. How to find Willoughby

The Willoughby group of parishes is directly to the east of Lincoln in the county of Lincolnshire, UK. It is just a few miles from the east coast and sits astride rolling countryside of the Lincolnshire Wolds.

  • Campaigner for free speech and religious liberty in America
  • Born 20th July 1591 in Alford
  • Father Rev Francis Marbury, 6 years headmaster of 1st Grammar School, had become preacher at St Wilfred's in 1991
  • Family moved to London in 1605 Father died in 1611
  • Anne married William Hutchinson 9th Aug 1612, a successful clothier.
  • They returned to Alford for 22 years and raised 14 children
  • William became Grammar School governor and Church Warden
  • The vicar of Alford at the time was not inspiring enough for Anne who followed John Cotton of Boston.
  • Her sister-in-law married Rev John Wheelwright of Bilsby
  • He and John Cotton were deprived of their livings and sailed on the Griffin to Boston Massachusetts in 1633 and the Hutchingson's followed in 1634

She became the first woman preacher and her followers were known as Antinomians. Anne was always in trouble with the established Puritans who put her on trial in 1638. On losing the case she was banished to Rhode Island. William died there in 1642. Anne was killed by indians in 1643 along with five of her children.

  • Born at Thetford, Norfolk in 1737.
  • Joined the Excise Service in 1762
  • Thomas arrived in Alford on 8th August 1764 but left 29th August 1765 when dismissed. He was reinstated at Lewes in Sussex
  • In 1774 he sailed to America editing on papers and the booklet "Common Sense". He was US Secretary of Foreign Affairs and served a year as Clerk to the Assembly of Pennsylvania.
  • He then wrote "The Rights of Man" & "The Age of Reason".
  • He was friendly with Benjamin Franklin, Thomas Jefferson (whom he helped with the Declaration of Independence) and George Washington
  • Died on 8th June 1809 penniless and a drunkard
