Rector's Thoughts When we don’t understand, We feel threatened, We turn to our assumptions. Assumptions is usually another word for - Prejudices. “If you wish to enter the kingdom of God you must be like a child”. A child is one who is open to the possibilities, looking for new questions - “what is it?” “ what’s it for?” “What can I do with it?” “Where did it come from?”. The child naturally has a sense of adventure. This “natural” sense of adventure is taught out of us in the socialisation process, we loose the sense of wonder, awe, trust, fun and adventure. When we come across something new we try to fit it into things we know, if that does not work we start-making deductions based on past experience. “Here is a black dog. I’ve never seen a black dog before but when I say a black bull it chased me. This dog is black, therefore it will chase me. - unless of course I can see “x” magpies who will bring me luck. Look there are “x” magpies so the dog is friendly.” Now you say I’m being absurd. I have heard similar arguments. When confronted with new situations, which may or may not have parallels in past experience, what is important is an open positive mind, the “mind of a child”. Christianity in the past has gained a bad name precisely because it clung to arguments like above dressing it up in religious language. This brought power, privilege and wealth and in time its downfall. This misuse does not make what Christ taught wrong, but it does mean we in the church have to rethink what we believe and how we practice it and those outside need to hear the new voice and not assume the past = now. When we don’t understand, Don’t feel threatened, Turn and look with the mind of Christ And all truth will be revelled. This was a successful day bringing together members from all the congregations of the deanery to meet, talk and worship with each other. It’s good for small groups of Christians to realise they are part of a bigger church. Each group was responsible for a different parts of the event which spread the workload and meant that everyone was involved. The money raised was to the expenses of the Deanery Missioner. Almost our full compliment arrived for lunch at our own Willoughby Arms on August 6th. With the snooker table moved to one side, there was ample room to accommodate the 15 diners who, with our usual good-humoured banter, enjoyed our chosen menus. I sometimes wonder what the Victorians would have made of our exuberance, although our table manners always remain impeccable!! Next venue will be uncharted territory for the Luncheon Club, but reports are good for Ye Old Borough Inn at Borough Le Marsh - 12:30 on Tuesday September 10th. All will be sure of a warm welcome. Shelia Kemp Bingo Well done to Linda Seymour and Mavis Skinn for co-ordinating weekly bingo sessions at the village hall. The Committed duo have now stepped down from this responsibility after 17 years of service. I’m sure I’m not alone in feeling sorry to hear that the Ladies received nothing in the way of thanks from the Village Hall Committee. Former Bingo Player Dry Rot!! Two words no one likes to hear. In church terms it can be disastrous. But those are the words being used about some interesting fungus in the N.E. corner of the Nth. Aisle of Willoughby church. After a full inspection to see how far it has travelled along the roof, we appear to have caught it in the corner and are looking at around £3,500 immediately to treat it. Will keep you informed. Daffyd Willoughby Photos for the archive You don’t seem to have been sitting around the barbecue sifting through those family photos this summer - well if you have you haven’t let me know. If we are to have a slide show in January I need your help with some photos to show. If there are photos you would like to see kept in the archive but not shown publicly then fine, I’ll store them on disk but note “not for public display”. History does not have to mean the 1920s - the Godspeed W/E is now history so photos through the 1990’s will be just as welcome. Have a word with Daffyd or Ian Evans Strawberry Fayre On a balmy summer’s day on June 23rd, this annual event again attracted many visitors, knowing that our strawberry teas were well worth sampling. Conscious of the vagaries of our weather pattern, this year it was again held inside the church, so eliminating the possibility of a human chain carrying tables and chairs to safer quarters. The choice of Pavlova, Flan or just Strawberries and Cream, with scones and tea, was a tough decision to make, reached after many “ums” and “ahs”. The added attractions of Tombola, Bottle Stall, Cake and Bric a Brac Stalls, an Old Photos of Willoughby Quiz (where is that?), a General Knowledge Quiz (I do know the answer, I just can’t think of it!), an extensive Raffle, and Board Games manned by Thomas and Jemma, kept visitors happily occupied. A bookstall outside the church gate, kindly run by Evelyn and Ken Treweek raised £17 towards the total sum of £551.64. To all those manning the stalls, providers of cakes and raffle prizes, servers, waitresses, and washer-uppers, and to all who came, supported and enjoyed, our sincere appreciation. Sheila Kemp Diocesan Tourist Board Awards These awards, started last year in conjunction with the County Council, were presented at St James Church in Louth on 18th June. Daffyd, Joan Stapleton and I attended the ceremony, delighted to achieve awards for both churches for the second year. St Thomas, Mumby gained a Highly Recommended Award, and St Helena, Willoughby were placed 3rd, both in the Small Parish section of East Lindsey. A tribute to Daffyd, and all those who work so hard to keep our churches clean and supplied with flowers throughout the year, including those who mow the grass. Shelia Kemp Just a Thought - 7 days without prayer makes on weak Bett & Joe Gray would like to thank all the people who helped in any way, to the success of the Strawberry Fayre, and they hope that everyone enjoyed their tea and the various games, etc. The splendid amount of over £550 was raised for Church Funds. On Sunday 30th June the children of the Sunday School held a pets service on the grass near the church. They were ably assisted by Daffyd and vet Keith Barrand, to whom we give many thanks for a lovely morning. We had many pets of various sorts and we are pleased to say that none of them ran away or got eaten. The following Sunday the children accompanied by Linda, Ian and Bett went to kids Adventure World at Mablethorpe for the morning, we had lunch and tried all the equipment on offer. Sunday School closes for the Summer Holiday when the children break up from school and commences again at the start of the new term in September. There will be a warm welcome for any new children who would like to join us. Bett Jokes in a box - Answers A chicken sandwich! The June Concert was given by Richard Langridge, (Guitar, Keyboard and vocals,) ably supported by Kathryn O’ Connor (Violin and vocals.) Most of the programme consisted of songs written by Richard, with some old favourites for us to join in with. A most enjoyable evening - everyone would have been willing for it to go on for hours! In July, Derek Rushmer, Folk singer and talented guitarist, gave us a splendid evening of lively folk music coupled with lots of comical anecdotes between numbers. Again the evening finished with us wanting more! Huttoft Primary School Pupils presented a musical concert in the afternoon of Tuesday 16th July. This is the third year that they have come along to entertain us with their musical talents, playing Cellos, Recorders and violins. It was very satisfying to see so many people turning up to enjoy their efforts. They will be back, near Christmas, with their Nativity Play - it’s worth your while to come along! For our August concert, the Torme Duo, from Wainfleet, brought us a magical evening of music. Tony Orme, with his rich bass voice, chose a mixture of Jerome Kern, Billie Holliday, George Gershwin plus the spirituals - I got a Robe/ Swing Low/ Were you there? John Hollins accompanied Tom on Keyboard and also made his own contribution with items on the flute plus “Clair de Lune” on keyboard. Absolutely fabulous! Crafty Afternoon Club Thank you to everyone who helped and supported our Summer Fayre on June 22nd. We did not have as good a response as we would have hoped but we aim to rectify this with our Christmas Fayre, which we know is always popular. On Monday, 5th August, we all boarded a coach and took a trip to Hemswell Craft and Retail Centre. The weather was kind to us as the rain stayed away and the sun did not overpower us. We all had a wonderful time and climbed back on the coach with bags and bundles and smiles. We would like to thank Beryl for organising this very successful trip and Neil, the Hunts coach driver who got us there and back safely. (I think he could have done with some earplugs to soften our steady chatter!) Our next event is on Monday 9th September. With a quick bribe of home made cakes, Chris Mayers, (a man with many hats to wear - Tree warden co-ordinator is one) from East Lindsey District Council, will be coming to give us a talk on Nature conservation. Having spoken to Chris on a number of occasions, we know how knowledgeable and interesting his talk will be. Please come, even if you do not usually attend on a Monday afternoon. Make a date for 2.00pm. YOU WILL BE MOST WELCOME. Eileen Mumby Community Group At a meeting of the Parochial Church Council Sub Committee, Which has run Becket’s Community Centre, it was decided to disband the group and form a new committee, which would be responsible for encouraging the community development of Mumby, including the surrounding area. This would mean that Mumby Church would be responsible for the building and the new group would just pay rent for the use of the community hall (still to be known as “Becket’s Community Centre.) It cost a great deal of money to have the Church nave converted for use as a community centre and we now need to make good use of it for all kinds of functions. Mumby community Group will, hopefully, be able to apply for grants to improve the village amenities. If you have any ideas how the Centre can be improved or further utilised, then your input would be valued. We shall be holding an inaugural meeting at 7.30pm on Monday23rd September 2002, in Becket’s to discuss this further and to elect a committee. We cannot stress how important it is to have a few (or even many) new faces that would take such an interest in Mumby. So - PLEASE come along and give YOUR support. L.I.V.E.S. First Responders Have you ever had to dial 999? Do you know anyone who has heart problems, or asthma, or been involved in an accident? In a town or city, expert help may be close to hand, but in a village, there will always be a delay for the medical service to reach you because of the distance they have to travel. L.I.V.E.S. First Responders are residents of your village who will be trained to give immediate response to emergencies. For example, if you can get aid to someone who has suffered a heart attack within the first six minutes, his or her chances of survival are dramatically increased. We need a minimum of 12 volunteers to run the scheme and at present we have 5, so we are appealing for more. If you could help, please contact Chris and Jane Dring for more information on 490052. Sloothby News Things are getting back to normal after the Jubilee Celebrations, which is still talked about in the village. A BBQ was held at the Mission on the 20th July, when we were blessed with good weather and good support with everyone joining in the entertainment. The Mission has been decorated inside, this was mainly due to Mick for the supply of the paint and the expertises, not to mention his acrobatic skills whilst painting the ceiling, it looks a treat. A weather Vane has been purchased with money left over from the Jubilee, this with an accompanying brass plaque has been fastened to the Old Black Smiths Shop on the corner of Sloothby Main Road and Hasthorpe Road, kind permission of Mrs & Mr Bonnett. Sad farewell’s to Garry and Amanda who have left the village to live in Reston, they were both active on the social side of the Mission. A Tribute to the Strimming Team On a warm summers evening in mid July, a happy band of men from Ulceby and Fordington (plus their strimming machines) gathered at Ulceby church yard to clear the debris, which has accumulated over the years. This they did with great gusto and good will. As a result, two hours later, the job has completed and they sat down to enjoy some well-earned refreshments provided by the churchwardens. A most hearty thank you to one and all who gave so generously of their time that evening to carry out this much needed task. Your help is very much appreciated by the PCC Autumn Harvest Festival The Annual Harvest Festival celebrations and Auction will be held at the Hay Wain, 14 October at 7:30 All are welcome. A jolly evening is guaranteed. L.I.V.E.S.AID 2002 THANK YOU MUMBY! What a fantastic response we had to the ‘L.I.V.E.S. AID’ Village Fete held at Manor Barn on Saturday 24th August to raise money to help establish a L.I.V.E.S. First Responder Team for Mumby and Cumberworth. Jane & Chris Dring would like to say Thank you to everyone who gave so generously of their time to help make the day such a great success, and to all those who donated such fabulous gifts which we were able to present as prizes for various events or use as tombola prizes. Thanks also go to the many musicians who entertained the crowd throughout the afternoon. As a result of everyone’s efforts we raised a staggering £785.40p on the day (and that’s a lot of 20p’s), but with cheques received and pledges of money we will have quite literally achieved a ‘grand’ total and exceeded £1000. A marvellous effort by everyone who contributed in any way whatever. On a personal note, Jane and Chris would also like to say a big Thank you for the garlands and the bird bath presented to us at the end of the afternoon. Totally unexpected and very appreciated. So … we’re planning to do it again next year and we would like your feedback so we can make the L.I.V.E.S. AID 2003 Village Fete even better. There will be a meeting at Manor Barn on the 19th September at 7.30pm for all who have already volunteered and for anyone who is interested in becoming a First Responder for the Mumby & Cumberworth Team. Please come along. The more volunteers we have … the easier it gets!
