Magazine for December 2001
Members of the Wold & Marsh team would like to wish everyone a pleasant Christmas and a joyous start to 2002 Deadline for next month's news is the 27th of this month. Items to me Rev Daffyd Robinson The Rectory, Station Road, Willoughby Tel/Fax 01507 462045 E-mail:dcr@willgp.f9.co.uk Remember the next edition is for January & February Rector Thoughts Christmas is upon us again. Finding the appropriate present becomes harder each year. It was so much easier when we had nothing. Then whatever was given was a sign of the care and love one had for the other. When we had nothing we could conjure up beyond what is present(pardon the pun) and see a whole army when we held the toy gun in our hands, or a whole railway network as the train went round the living room floor. In Fairy stories it’s not the physically or politically powerfulthat succeed but those who can see beyond the tinsel and havethe courage to trust the deeper values. Christians are those who recognise that God has given us apresent in himself, born not in a palace with all theadvantagesthat would bestow (hot water, a bed, etc.) but among theartisans, shepherds and a food trough for a bed. Growing uptosee more than illness but a person to be loved, touching the“untouchables”, thinking the unthinkable, seeing qualitieshidden from the surface. Finally giving his life to showthatstrength is not in the ability to live but in the quality oflove. Being a Christian does not make us dour and serious, anti fun. Just like the disciples we are looking for God’s presence in ourselves and in those around us, on a quest to express deeper realities, giving meaning to simple acts, to be honest with power, to serve. That’s the “magic” of Christmas. Funeral Phyllis Goodhand (W) Baptism Oscar Jay Osborne (M) Eva Vicars (Blessing W)

For this, the childrenand staff paid to put on their denims in aid of research carriedout at Great Ormond Street Hospital into children’s geneticdisorders. £28 was sent to the charity. At the recent Parish Council meeting Mr Kevin Goldsmith presented three estimates to the Council for a gas supply. The Chairman thanked him for all the time and effort he had put in to date on trying to obtain a supply for Willoughby. The report is as follows: GAS SUPPLY TO HOUSEHOLDS OF WILLOUGHBY VILLAGE The Parish Council has now received three quotes for gas supply through the village. TRANSCO Would require 139 homes to sign up at £931.66 each EAST MIDLAND ELECTRIC Would require 140 homes to sign up at Approx £1000 each BRITISH GAS CONNECTIONS Would require 103 households to commit to gas connections and pay the connection contribution at £697.00 each (British Gas Connections would then install a gas supply (through the village from Claxby corner) Quotes are based on external meter boxes throughout and a preferred meter location on the wall of the house facing the roadway. Separate connection charges and quotations would apply to any non-domestic premises that require connection and to those domestic premises requiring service pipes exceeding 30m long. This would provide an important service throughout the entire village i.e. modernisation/refurbishment/future building etc. According to the DTI gas is the cheapest fuel, then oil, solid fuel, electric and lpg. OFGEM THE GAS & ELECTRICITY REGULATING BODY can give a full list of gas suppliers and potential savings. Things to consider: All gas and electricity suppliers must provide free special help to people who are elderly, disabled or chronically ill. Dog fouling in the field is decreasing and its thanks to you for not taking your dogs into the field, for this we and the community thank you. For more information you can ring me on 466359 or see any Committee Member. We the Committee wish everyone a Happy Christmas and New Year. Linda Seymour THE WILLOUGHBEES After a last minute cancellation by Thornton’s Chocolates, 20 ladies gathered for a most interesting talk on Harrington Hall by Mr Phillip Madison who has been the gardener there for 25 years. The present building with the tower and structure to the right was built in 1678 on the medieval stones of a building dating back to circa 14th century. As we watched the slides we were horrified to see the building virtually destroyed 10 years ago by a fire accidentally started by decorators who were doing renovation work for the present owners, the Prices. A heavily weighted waterproof roof was put on to restart the renovation. The resulting present building is superior to the original one. Much work has been done on the gardens and lake where grebes now nest, also on the terraced garden of “Come into the garden, Maud” fame. The neglected kitchen garden has been restored and redesigned. It was wonderful to see the new Harrington Hall rise like a phoenix from the ashes. Raffle prizewinner were Mary Pridgeon and Joan White. Clare Challinor won the competition. Our next meeting is the Christmas Party on December 6th. Competition: party games. SEE AMID THE WINTER SNOW Mumby News Too earthy From TheQuantoxhead Parish Magazine: “Mr P and Mrs J will talk on “Sweet Peas” and there will be a pant swap.” Welcome! Dear Daffyd We have recently moved to Mumby from the Midlands. We felt sure we would settle in okay but those we left behind wondered how we would manage without all the hustle and bustle of City life. Well— we have settled in very well and through the “Wold and Marsh,” we would like to thank you and those villagers of Mumby who have made us so welcome. We had mixed feelings, as some folk said that there is nothing to do in Mumby, but how wrong they are. There is no need to go driving for miles. We have found plenty to do on our doorstep. So thank-you again for your lovely village and your lovely people. (Name & Address withheld - Ed.) Celebration To celebrate their 1st. Anniversary of Residence in the Red Lion, Steve and Karen held a Grand Party with Fireworks display on Saturday evening 3rd November. Unfortunately, because of the safety factor, the Parish Council’s bonfire, which was to be lit at the same time, had to be postponed. The party was a great success with the Pub absolutely packed to overflowing. Quiz Night The annual Winter Series of Church Quiz Nights got off to a rollicking start on Friday 9th November in the warmth of the Red Lion. Six teams lined up to try to answer Daffyd’s questions, some as baffling as ever! How does he think them up? Never the less, with much hilarity, the last question was answered and the results declared. Winners were “Mumby Mumblers,” scoring 41, with the “ Pine Hill Gang” only 1 point behind. 3rd were Willy Wanderers on 36. Bill Smith won the chance to attempt the Accumulator Question, getting it right and so winning a grand total of £23.00. (There had been no winners last season, so the pot was carried over.) The evening was climaxed sandwiches given and served by our Hosts, Steve and Karen. The series continues on 14th December, 11th January and 8th February. Yoga Eilean Gilburd is keen to get the Yoga group active again, in Becket’s, as before. She has made contact with several teachers who would consider coming. If you are interested, please give Eilean a ring on 490878. Should she get sufficient people interested, (Ladies and Gentlemen), it could be up and running in the New Year. The exercises are aimed to assist novices, are not strenuous and the pace is easy. May I, at this time, Wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Steve. SLOOTHBY NEWS The Harvest Festival on the 21 October saw the church full. Cath Allenby took the service, the theme was the church mouse which was quite appropriate, because as we were cleaning and sorting the church out for the afternoon, the first thing we saw was the church mouse, but it scampered away not staying for the service, but it didn’t know what it missed. Tea and cakes were served as we got underway to auction the produce. A total of £52.00 was raised for the church funds. Thank you all who attended and donated. The coffee morning on the 3rd November was not quite as full as expected but those who did come along enjoyed the chatter and hot toasted teacakes along with a warming cuppa. On the 10th November we were entertained by Brian Dawson and Fred Frost with a supper of pie and peas and a glass of their favorite tipple everyone enjoyed the night. We are hoping to hold a Christmas party on Friday 7th Decemberthere will be no charge for this, but would like all guest tobring some food as in faith supper and their own drinks.

There have been two events to raise funds for charity. The first was a Coffee Morning for Macmillancancer research. The Year 6 children organise and serve at this but are under the supervision of two adult volunteers. In the past the Mornings have been well attended but, for some reason-perhaps the weather, there was little custom this time. The children were disappointed but they managed to raise just over £20.The second event was Jeans for Genes Day. For this, the childrenand staff paid to put on their denims in aid of research carriedout at Great Ormond Street Hospital into children’s geneticdisorders. £28 was sent to the charity. Our annual Harvest Festival was held in the Church and we were pleased to see so many parents there. Children in Studio 3 hadthe daunting task of performing a short presentation thatreminded us of all the performing a short presentation thatreminded us of all the people whom wehave to thank for ourbread. We are looking forward to seeing the results of their labours inspring.Advance notice of forthcoming events to be held in school.Naturally, Christmas figures large in the calendar. The SchoolAssociation is arranging a Christmas Fair. They are trying a new time in the hope of enticing a few more people and avoiding any clashes with other organisations. The date will be 7th Decemberbetween 3 and 4.30 p.m. There will be a few songs from thechildren as an introduction to the main part and we hope thatmembers of the community will come along and enjoy what is anenjoyable occasion at a lovely time of year. The children’s concerts are already being rehearsed and all will be ready in time for them to be presented to parents and thosein the area who would like to see them, on 12th and 13thDecember in the school hall. There are also special services for people who are blind, partially sighted or deaf. Gas and electricity suppliers have to keep a list of these customers. If you are a pensioner, disabled or chronically ill, you can have a free annual check on the safety of gas appliances and other gas fittings. If anyone needs information on choosing a gas supplier or wants to know more about OFGEM and its role, they can be contacted on Free phone 0800 88 77 77 Competition in both gas and electricity has brought savings to millions of customers. Information given by OFGEM is factual, and advice given is impartial; to help choose the best supplier for your needs. We would like to hear your views and any interested households can Contact Marie Hibbert on 463859 before a gas transport company can be chosen. Welcome to the meeting was Marian Crouch a young Mum of two children. Dog fouling in the field is decreasing and its thanks to you for not taking your dogs into the field, for this we and the community thank you. The new slide should be installed by March 2002, in order to meet the requirements of the council grants we have been allocated. We still have to fund raise to meet our costs though. Some future events are as follows: December 15th - Coffee morning at the home of Sheila Jones, 8 Tavern Way. January 11th, 2002 - Children’s Disco and Party 6:30 pm - 8:30 pm (Primary School age) in the Village Hall February 19th, 2002, Fashion Show in the Village Hall March 2nd, 2002, Sausage and Mash with Videos in the Village Hall We thank you for your continued support of the Playing Field, a much used amenity of the Village.
