Rectors Thoughts
Once a year churches like all organisations have an AGM were we
elect officers for the coming year. Churchwardens are
also elected at
this time by the village not the PCC. (The only people
present tend to be PCC members, but all village people are
welcome to attend and stand for churchwarden.) After election
the churchwardens are given their “Charge” by the Archdeacon. At
this year's service/legal gathering David the Bishop of Grimsby
preached. His theme was the future of the church. The three
points being; Striving for Holiness, Sharing Responsibility,
Working for Mission. And he states “There is much gloom and doom
about in our church. If we put Holiness, Responsibility and
Mission at the top of our agenda as a church - then we will
overcome our problems and we will be effective in the cause of
the Kingdom.”
I’ve been mulling this over for some time
“How do we as a church make what we do meaningful
to the vast majority of you who read this magazine?”
I work with the premise that
    • The majority of you believe in God
    • The majority of you believe in some form of basic
Christianity
    • That God loves You already
It’s easy to say that the church has an image problem. If it
were that simple we’d bring in the consultants and 'hey presto'
problem solved. The main problem is not a image, but of
relevance. You can live without the church even for the rights
of passage (birth, marriage, death). However I believe that your
life and my life are enhanced by celebrating together.
I think there is a problem of perception much of which are
pictures of the church from 40 to 50 years ago. The strangeness
now is because we like the world have changed. Yes we have
messed about with the Lord’s Prayer, but that is part of us
moving forward both theologically and spiritually.
I don’t believe what I understand as being “the Church” is what
you perceive it to be and I would hazard a guess that mine is
far more exciting than yours.
Our  problem is how do we close the gap between your perception
and mine, because if we fail, the Church is under threat.

LADIES LUNCHEON CLUB
The Haywain was the venue for the Ladies Lunch on Tuesday June
12th  when 17 of us assembled for our monthly ‘chore free’ meal.
A happy atmosphere prevailed throughout - surely an aid to
digestion.   A special welcome was extended to our latest member
of the group - Evelyn Treweek - who I’m sure - enjoyed the meal
and the company, as we all did.
Raffle prize winners - Sue Hickman and Mary Butler - the latter
(being a comparative new ‘girl’) was gently informed she would
be responsible for a return raffle prize next month.
Next venue on July 10th will be the ‘Anchor’ in Alford.

CHINE SUPPER
Now established as a delightful annual event - the Chine Supper
was held in the Village Hall on Saturday June 9th.  In high
spirits and anticipation 75 people sat down to a tempting meal
fortified by their own supply of wine etc.  As always John and
Audrey Tuplin supplied and served the ham and stuffed chine.
New potatoes and salad accompanied the meal and was followed by
apple pie with cream, plum bread with cheese and tea or coffee.
Duly satisfied - the assembled guests were entertained by Brian
Dawson, a master of Lincolnshire songs, stories and dialect -
and a regular visitor to Willoughby events.
The ever popular raffle - with a goodly array of prizes -
boosted the overall contribution of £320.50p to St Helena’s
Church.   A lively and entertaining evening.   Whilst the ladies
of the PCC supplied the apple pies  - the preparation of the
first course - which was considerable - was attributed to Mavis
and Francis Skinn and the lovely table decorations to Linda
Seymour.  All three were in the hall at 7.45 am on the morning
of the 9th - laying the tables  and preparing the hall in
readiness.   To everyone who made the evening such a success -
our sincere appreciation.

Mahogany Hall Stompers will be returning to the village.

gospel and soul music before moving to the village hall until
midnight.   The leader will again be John Paddon on cornet with
a special re-appearance of Brian Carrick on clarinet and

when the venue was the church and then in the barn in Roughton’s
Willoughby yard.    On drums will be Charles King, Banjo - Roger
Howlett from Cambs, string bass  - Richard Marshall, Birmingham
and on trombone Chas Hudson from Norfolk.  A chance to see and
hear live New Orleans Jazz - tickets are £5 and limited to 100.

Make a note of the date now and get your ticket.
LADIES CHRISTIAN GROUP
June 18th was the second meeting at ‘The Conquers’, Church Lane,
Willoughby, where we looked at
1 Corinthian 13 about love.   As we discussed this familiar
chapter we found it very challenging.
A time of prayer followed ending with tea and coffee.
Anyone interested in joining us?
Next meeting Thursday July 19th at 7.30 pm.

and Knave.”
Welcome!
There are several new families who have come to live in Mumby
recently.  We wish you a warm welcome and hope you will join in
the social life of the village.  This magazine comes to you,
free of charge, each month, listing what’s happening in the near
future.  There are two Parish council notice boards, one at each
end of the village, which carry notices of events.  Notices are
also posted in the Red Lion and on the Church/ Becket’s notice
board.  All the Parish Councillors can offer assistance if
required.
Thank you
Sam Maltby wishes to thank all who supported her, at the recent
lay-by sale, to help raise funds for her Cultural Guiding
Experience to Switzerland.  Thank you also to those who made
very generous donations of items for the stall or gave money.  A
magnificent £70.15 was raised, which gave an excellent start to
her fund raising.  (Sam has promised an update for September’s
W&M.)
Mumby Parish Council
The Annual General Meeting was held on Tuesday 30th May.
Present were chairman, Cllr. C. Dring, V/Chairman, Cllr. S.
Mugglestone, Cllrs. J. Stapleton, A. Stark, M. Skarratts and S.
Harrington.  Also present were Clerk to the council, P.
Harrington and one member of the public.  Apologies were
received from Cllr. R. Kirby.  The Chairman and Vice Chairman
were re-elected for a further year in office.
A wide variety of village matters were discussed.  The village
well - The meeting agreed to thank Mr. P. Stapleton for the work
he had done in preliminary clearing the site.  The Chairman
informed the meeting that community service groups are available
for labouring duties if they are under strict and official
supervision.  A site meeting would be held in the near future.
Foot & Mouth - Lincolnshire County Council trading standards
services would be informed that the footpaths and bridleways
within the parish would remain closed.  The Chairman emphasised
the absence of the disease in the county was due to the
determined efforts of councils and communities and this would be
maintained.  Samantha Maltby - It was agreed to support her, in
her efforts to secure £500 funding, to represent the region at
an international camp, in Switzerland, based on the theme of
European citizenship.  Cllr. Skarratts, seconded by Cllr.
Harrington, proposed that £50 should be handed to Samantha.  The
Chairman said that the village should be proud that a young
villager should be selected for such an honour.  It was also
agreed that a sum of £50 should, each year, be put to support
any similar endeavours.  Anglian Water treatment plant - Cllr.
Skarratts reported that he was still receiving complaints about
the smell that emanates from the re-sited plant.  Anglian Water
had suggested that a cleaning programme but it appeared that it
was “Something the village would have to live with”.  The clerk
was asked to write to Anglian Water reiterating the Council’s
dissatisfaction with the situation.  Highways - Cllr. Skarratts
also spoke of the bad state of the grass verges and hedges in
the village, signs were obscured and visibility at some bends
and junctions were restricted and dangerous.   Cllr. Harrington
said that another resident had complained to her about dogs
fouling the verges outside her bungalow in Cumberworth lane.
“No Fouling” signs were handed out by the Chairman, two to be
given to the person who raised the issue.  The same person had
also complained about grass cuttings being thrown into the dyke,
causing flooding after heavy rain.  It was agreed to publicise
what damage this practice could do if it continued.  Venue of
meetings - It was unanimously decided to hold future Parish
Council meetings in Becket’s, starting at 7.15pm.  The next
meeting will be on 21st August.
The Annual Parish Meeting followed.  The main topic raised was
“Bus shelters”.  Mumby has not got one and the councillors were
in agreement that that getting one was unlikely.  At the moment,
buses stopped on request at various points in the village but,
should shelters appear, they would only stop at them.  This
would inconvenience a lot of people.
Reminder:  The Council Skip visits the Church Layby on the 2nd &
4th Saturdays of each Month from 8.30 - 8.50am.  You are
responsible for loading your items of rubbish.  No bags may be
dumped on the verges.
Church Concert
Too late for inclusion in the magazine, a concert was organised
for Friday 8th June. Frantic work by Daffyd to send out flyers
and posters resulted in a slightly smaller audience than usual
gathering to listen to Michelle Seaton singing “Songs from the
Shows.”  Appearing for the first time in Mumby, Michelle’s
initial nervousness disappeared as the audience warmed to her
presentation of well- known extracts from various stage
musicals.  She has a fine voice and I am sure she will prove to
be a popular returnee in the future.  The church ladies served
refreshments in the interval.  A programme of concerts for the
rest of the season, all to be held on the second Friday of the
month, has now been finalised; The next being held on Friday
13th July, not the 6th, as published last month.
Crafty Afternoon Club
The ladies continue to meet on Monday Afternoons at 2.00pm.  As
the news spreads, three new members have joined and it is hoped
that more will come along.  Currently they are learning the art
of “Decoupage” picture making.  No doubt this will add to the
items on sale at their Christmas Sale on Saturday 1st December.

Lambeth Palace
A fine and sunny 24th May saw Daffyd and I off to an appointment
at Lambeth Palace, the Archbishop of Canterbury’s residence.  We
drove down to Stanmore, leaving the car in the station car park
and catching a train into London.  Having a few hours to spare
before the evening reception, we made our way to the Millennium
Bridge only to find it was still closed.  We were able to have
an enjoyable time at the Tate Modern Gallery before making our
way to the London Eye.  Daffyd had booked a ride on it and,
although it was quite misty, we were able to see a lot of London
from a different angle.  We then had a steady walk along the
Embankment to the Reception.  The purpose was to celebrate the
winding-up of the Rural Churches in the Community Millennium
Lottery.  99 Churches in the country had received funding from
the scheme and slides were shown, by Susan Rowe, showing some of
the work done - A garage on the Isle of Harris converted to a
Church and Community Centre and many Churches being converted to
dual purpose use, similar to Mumby’s.  Archbishop Carey thanked
Susan for all the effort she had put into the scheme, presenting
her with a brooch in commemoration.  After a buffet meal, we
wended our way back home, tired, having had a very long but
enjoyable day.  Thanks are due to Daffyd for the hard work he
did to persuade them to support our alterations at St. Thomas’s
/ Becket’s.
Joan Stapleton.
Church Award
On the 4th June, Daffyd, Sheila Kemp and I were invited to Louth
Town Hall for the Church Tourism Awards, presented by the
Archdeacon.  Also present were the Mayor of Louth and the
Chairman of East Lindsey District Council.  In the Small village
class, Mumby Church finished second to Marshchapel, with
Theddlethorpe St. Helens in third place.  In the Medium Village
class, Willoughby was placed third to Sibsey and Tattershall.
Judging was by three anonymous persons.  The larger (Town)
Churches will be judged later and awards presented at Lincoln.

SLOOTHBY NEWS
A very successful BBQ and auction night was held on the 16 June
making a clear profit of £120.00.   Due to adverse weather we
had to buy a canopy which proved invaluable, if anyone would
like the hire of this, either for functions or private parties
we will hire it out at £1.00 per day.
The evening was made so successful by our excellent auctioneer
Steven Eyre who managed to squeeze as much money out of everyone
as possible without even knowing, plus the gavel banging keeping
everyone alert, but without the generosity of the villagers none
of this would have happened.   Thank you to all who turned up on
such a bad day to support us, it is very much appreciated and
makes the work that goes into these events more enjoyable.
Summer Fete
We will be holding our first summer fete on the 21 July - it
will start with a tour round Willoughby, Mumby and Welton le
Marsh and back to Sloothby by Bobby the Builder after which he
will do our grand opening at 2 pm.    2.30 will be a children’s
fancy dress competition with a first prize of £10.00 - so
children get your thinking caps on and give Sloothby a good
show.   The Fox Judo Club will be doing a Judo exhibition at 3
pm - it may entice you to start a new hobby.   To finish off the
days events at 4 pm there will be children’s games for all ages.
Table top sales will include cakes, gardening, tombola and many
more - if you are interested in having a table the cost is just
£5.00.
Tea, coffee and a BBQ will be served all day so come along and
support us - join in the fun and have a good afternoon out.
August 11th we will be serving cream teas on the lawns in front
of the Church from 2 pm to 4 pm  -  All welcome.
Finally if anyone has a vacuum cleaner gathering dust looking
for a good home look no further we will take care of it and put
it to good use.  Ring Keith or Sandra    01507 462759
